Industry's first commercial OpenMP API support dedicated for Keystone-based TMS320C66x multicore DSP that simplifies multicore development
TI Korea (CEO Kent Jeon, www.ti.com/ww/kr) August 31, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Jeon) announced industry-first commercial OpenMP™ API (Application Program Interface) support dedicated for multicore DSP (Digital Signal Processor) to enable developers to maximize utilization of multicore DSP. The OpenMP API is a scalable and portable programming model that provides a simple and flexible interface, supporting developers using TI's Keystone-based TMS320C66x multicore DSP to develop parallel applications in markets such as mission-critical systems, industrial automation, embedded vision, medical imaging, video surveillance, audio and video infrastructure, and high-performance computing. Through optimized software, developers can accelerate their development on TI's C66x DSP and fully leverage their multicore designs. (For more information, please refer to TI's multicore website)
Michael Wong, CEO of OpenMP, stated, "By TI bringing to market and distributing the industry's first OpenMP API support for multicore DSP, multicore programming has become significantly easier." He added, "With OpenMP API support on TI's Keystone-based C66x multicore DSP, developers can now easily migrate their applications while leveraging the advantages of power and performance. This will be a very important milestone for all developers in the embedded processing field."
As time progresses, software for embedded systems is becoming increasingly complex. This complexity has made software production a critical process in multicore embedded system development. Developers designing with TI's C66x DSP supporting OpenMP API can easily increase programmer productivity while reducing design and development costs for embedded systems and shortening time-to-market. TI currently provides OpenMP API support for its multicore DSPs including TMS320C6670, TMS320C6671, TMS320C6672, TMS320C6674, and TMS320C6678.
Professor Barbara Chapman of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Houston stated, "By adding OpenMP to its development tools, TI enables customers to more easily develop advanced software for TI's high-performance multicore systems, thereby improving productivity and reducing development costs and time-to-market." She further added, "The integration of TI's very powerful multicore processors with these tools will enable the development of new applications that were previously impossible."
Availability
TI's OpenMP API tools dedicated for C66x multicore DSP are now available for download as part of the C6x compiler.
