The semiconductor industry has experienced continuous growth and accounted for 21% of South Korea's total exports in 2018. However, in 2019, it is undergoing a downturn due to issues such as the spread of protectionism and memory inventory.

Semicon Korea 2020, where you can see the future of the semiconductor industry after 2020, will be held at COEX for three days from Wednesday, February 5 to Friday, February 7 next year.
Over 500 semiconductor companies from around the world are scheduled to set up more than 2,200 booths, and 130 semiconductor experts from around the world will conduct more than 25 technical programs.
The International Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Association (SEMI), which hosts the event, reported that approximately 50,000 people visited Semicon Korea 2019 and expects about 55,000 people to visit next year.
At Semicon Korea 2020, there will be keynote speeches related to AI and neuromorphic computing. In addition, the SEMI Technology Symposium, AI Summit, Smart Mobility Forum, Smart Manufacturing Forum, MEMS & Sensor Summit, and Market Trend Forum are scheduled to take place.
Semiconductor job mentoring (Meet the Expert), Women-in-Technology, and basic technical training on semiconductor manufacturing processes, which are part of SEMI's global talent development program, WFD (Workforce Development), will also be held.
Free admission to Semicon Korea 2020 is available for those who pre-register, and 1,000 pre-registered attendees will be selected by lottery to receive free coffee coupons. The deadline for pre-registration is Wednesday, January 29, 2020.

Silicon wafer shipments this year will decrease by 6.3% compared to the previous year.
SEMI announced its global silicon wafer outlook. Silicon wafer shipments in 2019 are projected to decline 6.3% compared to last year, which set a record high. Starting from 2020, shipments are expected to return to growth, and in 2022, a new record of 12.785 billion square inches is anticipated. Silicon wafers are a critical material in semiconductor manufacturing. They are produced in various diameters ranging from 1 inch to 12 inches and are used as substrate material, on which most semiconductor devices and chips are manufactured.

Global silicon wafer shipments decline for the fourth consecutive quarter
SEMI announced that global silicon wafer shipments have shown a declining trend for four consecutive quarters. In the third quarter of 2019, global silicon wafer shipments reached 2.932 billion square inches, down 1.7% from 2.983 billion square inches in the second quarter. This represents approximately a 9.9% decrease compared to 3.255 billion square inches in the same period of the previous year. Neil Webber, Director of Product Development and Applications at Shin-Etsu Handotai, stated, "Due to regional trade conflicts and global economic slowdown, silicon wafer shipments are occurring at lower levels compared to last year."
