September 6, 2012 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com , NASDAQ: ADI), a global leader in high-performance signal processing technology and data converters, today introduced the first product in a series of ultra-low-power 12-bit 1-Mega Sample Per Second (MSPS) Successive Approximation Register (SAR) A/D converters with integrated internal 2.5V reference circuitry. The new A/D converters are designed for data acquisition (DAQ) modules using Universal Serial Bus (USB) or battery power, handheld meters, field instruments, energy harvesting applications, and medical devices (e.g., portable ECGs and heart rate monitors). This product, which is the most power-efficient converter in its class, has a package size that is 33% smaller than a competitor's 12-bit converter with an internal reference circuit and consumes more than 70% less power than a competitor's SAR A/D converter with the closest performance.
Mike Britchfield, Vice President of the Industrial and Instrumentation Group at Analog Devices, stated, “The AD7091R offers more than 3.5 times higher power efficiency than competitor A/D converters as well as alternatives consisting of two chips of discrete ADC and reference circuitry,” adding, “This exceptional power performance advantage is designed for system engineers developing products with extremely limited system power consumption.”
The AD7091R core consumes 349μA (typ) at 3V when operating at 1MSPS, and power consumption changes automatically based on the sampling rate. Since it consumes 264nA of power-down current and 21.6µA of standby current, designers can further optimize energy consumption for intermittent data conversion or one-shot conversion. This new device has a reference temperature factor of 4.5ppm/˚C.

Additionally, when used with the rail-to-rail input and output AD8031 operational amplifier, power consumption can be reduced by more than 45% compared to previous products.
