The average monthly data traffic per smartphone is expected to increase to 24GB, and the number of IoT connections is expected to reach 5 billion.
Ericsson, in its Ericsson Mobility Report published last November, predicted that the number of 5G subscriptions worldwide would reach 2.6 billion over the next six years, based on the continued momentum of 5G and its rapidly evolving ecosystem.
According to the report, the average monthly data traffic per smartphone is expected to increase from 7.2 GB in 2019 to 24 GB by the end of 2025. This is partly due to new consumer behaviors like VR streaming: with 7.2GB per month, you can stream 21 minutes of HD video (1280 x 720) per day, while with 24GB, you can stream 30 minutes of HD video plus an additional 6 minutes of VR per day.
The report also projects that 5G will cover up to 65% of the global population and handle 45% of global mobile data traffic by the end of 2025. Indeed, leading telecom operators in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America competitively launched 5G services in 2019, and domestic 5G subscriptions have been growing rapidly, reaching a total of 3 million subscriptions by the end of September since the service launch in April. Furthermore, the launch of 5G services in China in late October has increased the projected number of 5G subscriptions by the end of 2019 from 10 million to 13 million.
Given current momentum, 5G subscriptions are expected to grow significantly faster than LTE, with North America experiencing the fastest adoption rate, with 5G expected to account for 74% of all mobile subscriptions by the end of 2025. Northeast Asia is expected to follow with 56%, followed by Europe at 55%.

The number of cellular IoT connections is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 25%, increasing from 1.3 billion at the end of 2019 to 5 billion by the end of 2025. It is estimated that NB-IoT and Cat-M technologies will account for 52% of cellular IoT connections in 2025.
Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, said, “5G now enjoys broad support from the majority of device manufacturers, and the increasing number of 5G devices launched in 2020 will further increase the scale of 5G deployments. The key question going forward will be how quickly we can turn 5G use cases into applications for consumers and businesses, and network modernization is also at the core of the technological transformation we will experience.”
Meanwhile, mobile traffic in the third quarter of 2019 grew 68% year-over-year, driven by a rise in smartphone subscriptions in India, increased monthly data traffic per smartphone in China, improved device capabilities, data-intensive content, and cheaper data plans.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
