TI Launches EEG Analog Front End for Non-Invasive Brain Wave Monitoring with 75% Noise Reduction
TI Korea (CEO Kent Jeon, www.ti.com/ww/kr) September 11, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Jeon) has expanded its award-winning ADS1298 Analog Front End (AFE) product family by launching a product with noise reduced to industry-leading levels. The newly added ADS1299 is a noise-optimized EEG (Electroencephalography) AFE product that supports non-invasive brain wave monitoring functionality. The 24-bit 8-channel ADS1299 is the first simultaneous-sampling EEG AFE that delivers a minimum input referred noise of 1μVpp, which is 75% or lower than competitive EEG AFE products. When used in 32-electrode EEG systems, this device can reduce board space by up to 70% while achieving 40% BOM (Bill Of Material) cost savings. (For more information and sample orders, refer to www.ti.com/ads1299-pr-kr)
The ADS1299 is designed for extra-cranial biopotential measurement equipment manufacturers seeking to improve performance while reducing board space and cost, and shortening design time. It can also be used in EEG equipment for monitoring bispectral index, evoked potentials, and ERP (Event-Related Potentials) to diagnose brain injury, stroke, and sleep disorders. It is also suitable for ultra-high-performance medical diagnostic and research-grade ECG (Electrocardiogram) equipment.
Key Features and Advantages of ADS1299
• Board Space and BOM Cost Reduction:
o Integrated eight low-noise programmable gain amplifiers, 24-bit high-resolution 8-channel ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter), test signal, bias amplifier, oscillator, and reference
o When used in 32-electrode EEG systems, external components are minimized to reduce noise while using minimal channels, significantly reducing board space and BOM compared to competitive EEG AFE solutions
• Highest Performance Delivery: Provides minimum input referred noise of 1μVpp at 70Hz bandwidth and superior -120dB CMRR (10dB better than competitive products), supporting extra-cranial biopotential measurement even in the presence of high EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) signals
• Enhanced Equipment Reliability: Continuous lead-off detection option alerts when electrode disconnection occurs
• Pin Compatibility Support for Reduced Design Cost and Shortened Time-to-Market: Compatible with 8-channel (ADS1298, ADS1298R, ADS1198), 6-channel (ADS1296, ADS1296R, ADS1196), and 4-channel (ADS1294, ADS1294R, ADS1194) products from the ADS1298 family, enabling medical equipment manufacturers to design a complete product line with a single EEG/ECG device family, thereby reducing total design cost and shortening time-to-market
Tools and Support
The ADS1299 Performance Demo Kit (ADS1299EEG-FE) includes user-friendly evaluation software with built-in analysis tools including oscilloscope, FFT, and histogram display, flexible input configuration, optional external reference circuitry, and the ability to transfer data in simple test file format for post-processing. IBIS models are also provided for verifying board signal integrity requirements.
Availability and Packaging
The ADS1299 is currently available in a 10mm x 10mm QFP package at $36 per unit in quantities of 1,000.
