Operation of Integrated Situation Room Begins in Preparation for End of Windows 7 Technical Support

Technical support for Windows 7, an OS released by Microsoft in 2009, will soon end.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Choi Ki-young) announced on the 2nd that it will establish a 'Windows 7 End of Technical Support Comprehensive Situation Room' within the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) to respond to cyber threats, such as new malware infections and exposure to hacking risks, as technical support for Windows 7 ends on the 14th of this month.
The General Situation Room is composed of and operated by a General Countermeasures Team responsible for cooperation with related agencies and external public relations, a Technical Support Team responsible for developing and distributing dedicated vaccines, a Situation Team responsible for situation monitoring, incident response, and dissemination of information to related agencies, and a Civil Complaints Team providing specialized consultation services regarding the end of Windows 7.
In particular, we will intensively monitor cyber threats, such as malware that exploits new vulnerabilities after the end of technical support for Windows 7. In addition, in the event of malware emergence, we plan to prevent the spread of damage by collaborating with antivirus companies to develop and distribute customized dedicated antivirus software.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to strengthen public awareness campaigns regarding the end of technical support for Windows 7 through various channels, including public promotion via social media, press reports, and security notices; promotion via banners on the websites of the government, affiliated agencies, and local governments; strengthening consultation services at the KISA 118 Cyber Civil Service Center; and promotion of the end of support notice and guidance on replacing domestic OS through the Bohonara website.
Park Yun-gyu, Director General of Information Security and Network Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “We will continuously strengthen public awareness campaigns regarding the security risks associated with the end of technical support for Windows 7 and the necessity of replacing or upgrading the OS,” adding, “Even after the end of technical support, we will respond to cyber threats swiftly and systematically by operating a comprehensive situation room and maintaining a close cooperative system with relevant agencies, such as the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in the public sector.”

Domestic PC shipments in Q3 2019 up 13.4% year-on-year
국내 PC 출하량이 전년 대비 13.4% 증가한 것으로 나타났다. IT 시장분석 컨설팅 기관인 인터내셔날데이터코퍼레인션코리아는 최근 PC 연구 분석에 따르면 2019년 3분기 국내 PC 출하량은 데스크톱 53만대, 노트북 49만대 총 102만대로 집계됐다고 발표했다. 이는 오는 2020년 1월부터 윈도우7 지원이 종료됨에 따라 공공·교육 부문을 중심으로 노후화된 데스크톱의 대규모 교체가 영향을 미친 것으로 분석했다.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation. The company explained that it reduces the limitations of existing security operations centers, which have had to forgo some data due to high cost structures, and enables large-scale data analysis and automation based on open formats and ecosystems. LakeWatch is currently offered as a private preview, with Adobe and Dropbox mentioned as early customers. Databricks also announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic as well as the acquisition of Antimatter and SiftD.ai.
