LG Uplus Completes 5G Roaming Test with Japan's KDDI

Promotion to Use 5G Roaming with LTE Roaming Rates
LG Uplus announced on the 10th that it has completed 5G roaming tests in Japan in preparation for the July Tokyo Summer Olympics.

LG Uplus has signed an agreement with Japan's KDDI for 5G roaming interconnection, and began network interconnection between the two companies' 5G networks in January. The company also completed 5G smartphone roaming tests using commercial networks in Japan in early this month.
KDDI, which has been building 5G base stations in major Japanese cities including Tokyo since last year, is preparing for service launch next month. The 5G roaming service is scheduled to be provided after Japanese carriers' 5G service commercialization in late March this year.
LG Uplus is currently providing 5G roaming services in four countries including China, Italy, Switzerland, and Finland, and plans to expand the number of countries providing 5G roaming services as 5G services begin in earnest in major overseas countries this year.
Considering that 5G services in overseas countries are in their early stages and the number of 5G roaming countries is limited, LG Uplus is running a promotion that allows customers to use 5G data roaming at the same rate as existing LTE roaming charges.
LG Uplus 5G customers visiting 5G roaming countries can subscribe to the 'Zero' rate plan, an LTE roaming service, to use both LTE roaming and 5G roaming without additional charges.

SK Telecom reported annual results for 2019 on a K-IFRS basis, recording revenue of 17.7437 trillion won, operating profit of 1.11 trillion won, and net income of 861.9 billion won. Revenue reached an all-time high on an annual basis, increasing 5.2% year-over-year. Operating profit declined 7.6% year-over-year due to increased 5G network investments including 5G spectrum costs. Net income decreased 72.5% due to factors including the equity method profit impact from SK Hynix.

LG U+ announced on the 7th that it achieved revenue of 12.382 trillion won, service revenue of 9.206 trillion won, and operating profit of 686.2 billion won for 2019. Revenue and service revenue increased by 5.6% and 2.9% respectively compared to the previous year. Operating profit decreased by 7.4%. Among service revenue, wireless revenue recorded 5.517 trillion won, growing 1.4% year-over-year. The number of subscribers exceeded 15.256 million, an increase of 8% from the previous year.

According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
