LG Uplus-Intel-WINS, for 5G Network Protection
First Development of 100G-Class High-Capacity Intrusion Prevention System in Korea
Capable of handling 5 times more traffic than existing equipment


LG Uplus announced on the 20th that it has developed the first 100G-class high-capacity Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) in Korea for 5G network protection with Intel and Wins.

An IPS is a security device that protects a network by detecting and blocking various forms of external attacks, such as worms, viruses, and DoS attacks. This development was carried out to reliably protect 5G networks from harmful traffic, such as hacking attacks.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the total 5G traffic generated during the month of December last year was 121,444 terabytes (TB), and the average traffic per person was 26.6 gigabytes (GB).

This represents an increase of approximately 19% compared to the average traffic per person of 22.4GB in April of last year, when 5G was commercialized, and is 2.8 times higher than the average of 9.5GB per LTE subscriber in December.

With the development of a 100G-class high-capacity IPS, LG Uplus is now able to handle five times more traffic than existing equipment. This not only increases operational management efficiency but also reduces the space occupied by IPS equipment within central offices. Electricity consumption is also reduced by about 70%.

It has become possible to respond to potential threats by utilizing machine learning techniques, such as correlation analysis through automated traffic learning and behavioral analysis through data mining.

The development of this 100G-class high-capacity IPS was carried out in cooperation with Intel and Wins, a domestic information security specialist.

LG Uplus provided a communication infrastructure environment that takes into account various security threats and traffic changes in the 5G environment, and Intel provided the latest high-performance CPU scheduled for release to enable large volumes of traffic to be processed without loss. Wins developed a 100G-class high-capacity IPS by leveraging its experience in developing security equipment.

Wins CEO Kim Dae-yeon stated, “Wins is the only domestic vendor supplying IPS to domestic and Japanese mobile carriers,” adding, “We will create synergy in the 5G market based on Wins’ security technology, LG Uplus’s telecommunications capabilities, and Intel’s competitiveness in server CPUs.”
