September 27, 2012, Seoul - STMicroelectronics (hereinafter ST), a global semiconductor company providing diverse electronic applications and a leading provider of digital TV and set-top box ICs, demonstrated a cable modem compliant with the latest DOCSIS® 3.0 specification at the International Broadcasting Equipment Exhibition IBC 2012 held in Amsterdam.
ST's DOCSIS 3.0 modem can achieve data rates of 800 Mbps downstream and 108 Mbps upstream by bonding 16 downlink channels and 4 uplink channels. This represents significantly faster speeds compared to other modems currently supplied, enabling multiple users to simultaneously experience high-quality Full HD multimedia and interactive services through home networks. ST's related expertise has been instrumental in enabling this high-speed data transmission rate.
ST's DOCSIS 3.0-based cable modem technology is based on a dual-core ARM® Cortex™-A9 processor and is utilized in applications such as routing, switching, telephony, security, and media server functions. Through support for multimedia and security algorithms for paid TV and Internet-based services, it will serve as a key product among ST's IC offerings for applications including cable set-top boxes, headed/headless gateways, and cable modems.

DOCSIS 3.0 Technology
DOCSIS cable modems are used by cable operators and equipment suppliers in major countries worldwide. With widespread adoption of DOCSIS, including Europe's EuroDOCSIS, cable TV operators can now provide full-service video, voice, and data communications.
The latest version, DOCSIS 3.0, supports IPTV, enabling the implementation of customized content and streaming video services, and also supports next-generation Internet Protocol (IPv6). Furthermore, various improvements such as service enhancements can be anticipated.
DOCSIS 3.0 enables channel bonding for cable modems. This flexible technology enables the realization of high-performance devices delivering data rates exceeding 100 Mbps, allowing multiple users to simultaneously enjoy rich multimedia services and Internet access.
According to market analysis firm IMS, DOCSIS 3.0 customer premises equipment (CPE) shipments are projected to reach 49 million units by 2015.
