TI Launches Buck-Boost Converter That Cuts Power Consumption of 3G and 4G LTE Power Amplifiers in Half
September 27, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Tran) has released a seamless-transition buck-boost regulator for RF power amplifiers used in 3G and 4G LTE smartphones, tablets, and data cards. The LM3269 1A buck-boost converter reduces current consumption by up to 50% to improve battery life while lowering amplifier heat generation by up to 30°C. 4G mobile phones require higher data uploads, such as for “real-time” on/off usage of applications. Therefore, high RF power amplifier output is required even under low battery voltage conditions to support LTE. The LM3269 saves energy and extends battery life by dynamically adjusting the power delivered to the power amplifier according to the required power amount. Through this converter, the amplifier can operate across the entire battery voltage range, achieving maximum efficiency and lowest noise.
