Seoul, October 5, 2012 — Infineon Technologies (Korea Representative Director Seung-soo Lee) announced that its security chip has been exclusively adopted for Continental’s next-generation digital tachograph, VDO DTCO. By using Infineon chips, Continental can efficiently implement a system that complies with the high security standards set by the EU in 2009. Infineon supplies Continental with a security controller that is “Common Criteria EAL5+ high” certified and supports trusted authentication functions for digital tachographs.

Since May 2006, the EU has mandated digital tachographs for all newly registered trucks weighing over 3.5 tons and buses providing eight or more seats. Since October 2012, in accordance with EU regulations, only next-generation products that are difficult to tamper with and do not malfunction may be installed on trucks. The EU introduced electronic “black boxes” to improve safety on the road by efficiently monitoring driving times.
On average, about 500,000 new trucks are registered in the EU every year. Each truck must be equipped with a fixed digital tachograph. The electronic tachograph records data related to the vehicle's total mileage, road speed, engine speed, etc., as well as the driver's driving and rest times. Driving data must be stored for at least one year.
Infineon's security controllers used in these applications were tested by T-Systems, an internationally accredited testing and certification company. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) verified high-quality security performance in accordance with the "Common Criteria," an internationally recognized standard for rigorous evaluation and certification of security chips.
