TI Launches Industry's Smallest Fully Integrated 16-bit ADC
Small, low-power device for portable battery-powered industrial equipment
TI Korea (CEO Jaejin Kim, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) July 29, 2011 – TI has launched the industry's smallest 16-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) featuring an integrated Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA), reference, temperature sensor, and 4-input multiplexer. Measuring 2mm x 1.5mm, the ADS1118 device is more than 65% smaller than other 16-bit ADCs currently on the market. The ADS1118 provides direct, linear measurements that are 75% better than competitors by guaranteeing an uncalibrated error of within 0.5°C over the 0°C to 65°C range. As the lowest-power 16-bit ADC, it also integrates an internal reference and supports data rates of up to 860 samples per second (sps). Key Features and Advantages of ADS1118
• Reduced overall solution size through integration: Integrates a 16-bit ADC, PGA, temperature sensor, low-drift reference, and 4-input multiplexer to convert multiple signal data from various types of sensors.
• Saves board space with a small size: Small QFN package options allow for mounting close to the sensor, and component count is reduced by simplifying thermocouple cold junction compensation.
• Extended battery life with low power: Supports 2.0V to 5.5V power supplies and consumes only 150µA (rated), extending the battery life of portable battery-powered industrial equipment used for temperature measurement, gas monitoring, industrial process control, instrumentation, etc.
• Combined with the MSP430™ microcontroller, it provides a comprehensive data conversion solution
Tools and Support
TI provides various tools and support, such as IBIS models, anti-aliasing filter tools for data converters, and operational amplifier to ADC circuit terrain calculators, to reduce development time using the ADS1118. In addition, development engineers can ask questions and receive troubleshooting support through the Precision Data Converter forum of the TI E2E™ community.
You can also purchase an evaluation module (ADS1118EVM) containing software and source code for $49.
Supply timing, packaging, and price
The ADS1118 is currently available in a 5mm x 3mm MSOP package. Additionally, samples of a 2mm x 1.5mm QFN package are currently available, and mass production is scheduled to begin in December. The price for both package options is $2.22 per 1,000-unit quantity.
