LG Uplus announced on the 10th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Potenit, an unmanned automated robot developer, regarding "5G-based smart port logistics automation business cooperation." Due to COVID-19, the MOU was conducted in writing.
This collaboration focuses on the "logistics automation" area of 5G smart ports. They will develop a solution that combines Potenit's unmanned and automated logistics facility technology with LG Uplus' 5G technology, and jointly pursue related projects.
Specifically, they will cooperate on ▲advancing autonomous driving technology for 5G-based unmanned facilities ▲linking unmanned facilities with 5G network infrastructure ▲establishing a control system based on mobile edge computing (MEC) ▲remote control of unmanned facilities based on ultra-low latency video transmission technology.
The two companies plan to plan a service for unmanned automation of port logistics facilities in the first half of the year, and in the second half of the year, they plan to analyze on-site logistics facilities and environments to develop usable service scenarios. Starting next year, we plan to conduct service verification by gradually applying actual research and development and implemented technologies.
When logistics automation becomes commercially viable, numerous logistics facilities will be able to transport containers autonomously within ports without manual intervention. Control centers will be able to monitor and remotely control the facilities with a small team via 5G communications. This will not only increase the operational efficiency of smart ports through cost savings, but also prevent safety accidents occurring in storage yards.
Meanwhile, LG U+ has been demonstrating smart port operations based on a 5G commercial network at Busan Port in collaboration with Seoho Electric since August of last year. They plan to complete the autonomous crane operation and logistics system integration within the year and prepare for commercialization next year.
