Global '5G MEC Interoperability Technology' Standards to be Established by 2022

Domestic companies are stepping forward to establish global 5G MEC interoperability technology standards.

SK Telecom announced on the 16th that technology related to a '5G MEC (Mobile Edge Computing)' interoperability platform, proposed at the ITU-T meeting, has been adopted as an international standardization project. Technologies adopted as international standardization projects become global standards after undergoing discussions among dozens of countries within the ITU-T.
The 'Federated multi-access edge computing' proposed by SK Telecom is a technology that enables service providers to provide the same 5G MEC services regardless of region or carrier by establishing a separate channel that can link 5G MEC systems within each carrier.
Once 5G MEC interoperability becomes possible based on international standards, consumers will be able to use 5G MEC services regardless of their region or carrier. In addition, service developers can increase development efficiency by reducing the process of optimizing the same service for each carrier's 5G MEC system.
SK Telecom will research the structure, signaling specifications, and requirements of federated multi-access edge computing technology with the goal of completing international standards in 2022 at SG11 Q7 of the ITU-T, which is researching '5G MEC specifications for AI, big data, and mobility services'.
Meanwhile, on the 1st, SK Telecom launched the 'Telecom Edge Cloud TF,' a demonstration research group on 5G MEC interoperability, together with the GSMA and nine global telecommunications companies. In January, it launched the 'Global MEC TF' with five telecommunications companies in the Asia-Pacific region to accelerate the commercialization of 5G MEC.

SK Telecom is launching a Global 5G MEC Task Force with five member companies of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunications Community Association and creating pathways for 5G technology exports. In collaboration with Singtel, Globe, Taiwan Mobile, HKT, and PCCW Global, SK Telecom will share 5G MEC achievements with member companies preparing for 5G commercialization within the year, while pooling the capabilities of each company to jointly develop MEC technology and services. Additionally, standard specifications for a borderless MEC platform will be established.

KT and five global telecom companies form the MEC alliance "5G Future Forum."
The 5G Future Forum conducts collaborative standards development work to provide interoperability between 5G MECs distributed globally across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. The forum is composed of a total of six telecommunications carriers: KT, América Móvil, Rogers, Telstra, Verizon, and Vodafone. Going forward, the 5G Future Forum plans to focus on developing a unified specification for MEC interoperability.

Global Task Force Launched to Promote 5G MEC Commercialization and Interoperability
Nine global telecom operators, including SK Telecom, have launched a Telecom Edge Cloud Task Force with the goal of commercializing 5G MEC. The Telecom Edge Cloud Task Force aims to achieve global commercialization of 5G MEC technology through interoperability between edge clouds that each operator is separately building. To this end, participating companies plan to conduct demonstration tests including interworking and sharing of edge cloud technologies and services that each company possesses.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
