LED Backlight Boost Switch Device – Reduces Power Loss and Minimizes Intermittent Oscillation in High-Power LED Applications
Designers of high-power LEDs face the challenge of minimizing power loss and sub-harmonic oscillation caused by inefficient discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) boost converters. Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS)’s FAN7340 and FAN73402 single-channel boost controllers, which integrate high-voltage dimming MOSFETs, address this challenge by enabling high efficiency, performance, and reliability when designing high-power lighting applications, such as LED backlighting used in 3D televisions and monitors.
These backlight drive boost switch products utilize a current mode control topology with programmable slope correction to prevent intermittent oscillation. By integrating internal dimming and analog pulse-width modulation (PWM) functions, these devices achieve a fast PWM dimming response, thereby overcoming the limitations of DCM boost converters.
These device products can minimize the number of required components by integrating protection functions such as low voltage lockout, open LED protection, and overvoltage protection. In addition, these device products prevent errors by generating a FAULT signal and providing a delay time when abnormal LED string conditions occur.
