October 16, 2012, Seoul, Korea - Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL, www.freescale.com) has added four new products to the QorIQ T1 and T2 64-bit processor family, including the quad-core T1040 "router on a chip," which is the industry's first 64-bit processor with an integrated gigabit Ethernet switch.
With the addition of these new products, the QorIQ T1 and T2 product families have become one of the most scalable and pin-compatible 64-bit embedded multi-core communications processor families in the industry. Based on Power Architecture® technology, these new products target entry-level to mid-range networking, printing, and security device applications. The T1 family now includes dual-core and quad-core devices, while the T2 family includes virtual 8-core devices, offering broad performance ranging from 1.2GHz to 1.8GHz per core.
Along with the T1040, Freescale is also announcing the T1020 with dual cores and integrated Ethernet switch, the dual-core T1022, and the T2081 virtual 8-core device based on the Power Architecture e6500 core. All of these devices are pin-compatible with each other.
Bernd Lienhard, Senior Vice President and head of Freescale's Networking Processor business unit, stated, "Freescale has once again leveraged its rich networking IP and intelligent integration capabilities to deliver one of the most scalable and pin-compatible multi-core communications processor families in the industry." The T1/T2 devices integrate CoreNet, PCI Express®, Ethernet networking interfaces, a combination of programmable and fixed processing units, Freescale's expanded DPAA (Data Path Acceleration Architecture) with integrated fixed functions and networking offload, precise pattern matching, and security features. Through intelligent integration, advanced process technology, and proven design capabilities, Freescale supports optimal performance and scalability, as well as flexible power tuning for more energy-efficient designs.
The new T1040 and T1020 products feature eight integrated gigabit Ethernet switches and also incorporate features and characteristics of the recently announced T1042 device, including the Freescale DPAA engine, QUICC engine block supporting a rich protocol set, shared virtualization technology, and next-generation security features. Additionally, with scalability of 1.2GHz to 1.4GHz and precise power management systems supporting deep sleep mode, energy-efficient fanless designs are possible.
The T1040 and T1020 processors deliver top-tier performance per watt and reduce overall system cost, power, and design complexity, making them ideal solutions for low-cost routers. By offloading key tasks to the switch, the CPU can handle other tasks, and these devices provide 2x to 4x better performance than Freescale's current-generation QorIQ P1 processor while maintaining the same power budget. Target applications include switching and routing equipment for enterprises and service providers, security devices, factory automation, and smart grid networking products for industrial applications.
The new dual-core T1022 processor delivers 2x to 4x superior performance and SerDes bandwidth compared to Freescale's current-generation QorIQ P1/P2 devices while maintaining the same power budget. This product targets numerous power-sensitive applications such as enterprise switching and routing equipment, security devices, and factory automation networking products.
The new T2081 device integrates four dual-threaded Power Architecture e6500 cores operating at up to 1.8GHz, delivering over 2x the performance of mid-level 45nm QorIQ P-series devices with comparable power consumption in core performance, cache size, SerDes bandwidth, and Ethernet capabilities. Key features include advanced virtualization technology, broad I/O options, DPAA, and robust security functions.
The dual-threading technology of the e6500 core delivers 1.7x the performance compared to single-threaded operation and utilizes a 128-bit AltiVec SIMD (single instruction multiple data) data processor that performs computations previously handled by DSPs, such as media acceleration and radar processing, with significantly less power. The T2081 is designed for control plane or integrated control/data plane processing. Target applications include mobile backhaul equipment, LTE/WCDMA channel cards, control cards and NICs, and test and measurement products.
Energy-Efficient Operation
The T1 and T2 product families employ advanced power management techniques using variable-mode power switching to reduce energy consumption and meet the demanding power range requirements of OEM suppliers, allowing customers to independently and precisely adjust core and other processing unit power consumption. This approach also includes deep sleep and standby modes, enabling the development of products consuming less than 0.5W while maintaining fast, responsive networking required for on-demand processing. The T1/T2 device architecture, designed to comply with ECC (European Code of Conduct) and EnergyStar energy consumption standards, and 28nm manufacturing technology support fanless, air-cooled system designs. The e5500 core reduces system energy consumption using Nap/Doze/Sleep power-saving modes and supports deep sleep without packet loss through automatic response technology based on ECMA 363.
Availability and Development Support
Freescale plans to provide samples of the T1040 device in the third quarter of 2013, followed by samples of other T1 and T2 devices. Leading RTOS and/or development tools support is planned from Enea, Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics, and Wind River.
