Fairchild's New Smart Gate Driver Optocoupler Provides Designers with Isolated Gate Driving and Fault Detection Capabilities
High-power industrial applications such as solar power inverters, motor drives, and UPS (uninterruptible power supply) require gate driver optocouplers that provide high performance and critical protection features. Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) has developed the FOD8316 smart gate driver optocoupler, an advanced 2.5A output current IGBT drive optocoupler, to help designers address these technical challenges.
The FOD8316 optocoupler provides critical protection necessary to prevent failure conditions that cause destructive thermal runaway in IGBTs. This new product family features high-speed isolated feedback for fault detection and is optimized for driving high-speed switching power IGBTs and MOSFETs. The device consists of an integrated gate drive optocoupler featuring a CMOS transistor with low RDS(ON) characteristics capable of driving an IGBT in a rail-to-rail state.
