Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to Support Drone Companies in Becoming Mid-sized Enterprises
The domestic drone industry faces difficulties in developing new technologies due to a lack of funding, and the demonstration of developed technologies is also limited to suburban areas rather than urban ones due to regulations, raising doubts about their effectiveness.
On the 21st, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport selected four regions, including Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Busan Metropolitan City, Daejeon Metropolitan City, and Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province, as drone demonstration cities for 2020.
Thirteen companies (Entech Logic, LIG Nex1, Nears Lab, Gryphon Dynamics, X-Drone, 4S Mapper, Argosdyne, UCON Systems, P-Square, AirOn, Gruzen, DroneBus, and BlueGenDrone) were also selected for the regulatory sandbox project to support the early commercialization of drone-related technologies.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it plans to start pilot testing as early as June after preparing safety management measures.
Each of the four local governments selected this time will receive up to 1 billion won in support.
Jeju Island is enhancing safety services utilizing drones to demonstrate smart-based safety monitoring and drone-based emergency medical supply delivery services.
Busan City is establishing and demonstrating an integrated system that solves environmental management and natural disasters using drones, and We plan to export our services to overseas sister cities in the future.
Daejeon City is conducting inspections of urban gas pipelines and demonstrations of precision takeoffs and landings for emergency deliveries utilizing the rooftops of public institutions, in a situation where drone flights are difficult due to the entire area being a no-fly zone.
Goyang City plans to demonstrate information technology-centered safety management using drones to diagnose and inspect facilities, such as identifying the status of sinkhole accidents, and to analyze and transmit data in real time.
Each of the 13 companies selected for the regulatory sandbox project will be provided with up to 400 million won. The companies plan to demonstrate drone food delivery services on the Han River, develop precision-controlled gimbal cameras, establish drone defense systems, develop AI-based object recognition technology, and develop drones capable of detecting the sound of people in distress.
An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated that, in addition to this project, the ministry plans to support the drone industry in various ways, such as improving regulations and opening up overseas markets, to help drone companies grow into mid-sized enterprises.
