Wolfson Announces High-Performance Top-and-Bottom Port Silicon MEMS Microphones
October 23, 2012 – Wolfson Microelectronics ( www.wolfsonmicro.com ), a leader in the design and development of mixed-signal semiconductors and high-definition (HD) audio products for the global consumer electronics market, today announced Wolfson’s first top-and-bottom port silicon analog MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) microphones, the WM7121 and WM7132. These products are designed to enable frequency response matching to provide superior audio quality in a wide range of consumer electronics applications.
Now, HD (High Definition) video is used as a standard on almost all mobile devices, and according to a GSM Arena study, 70% of young adults under the age of 18 capture video with their personal mobile phones every week, and the demand for HD video is surging, and consequently, the demand for HD audio is also increasing.
The WM7121 and WM7132 have a very high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 65dB and a matching response using a frequency bandwidth of 10Hz to 20kHz, providing excellent HD audio quality and near-original audio recording in various mobile applications such as mobile phones, Bluetooth headsets, navigation systems, game consoles, and digital cameras/camcorders.
In addition, the WM7121 and WM7132 microphones provide matching of phase response and sensitivity along with frequency response, making them ideal for stereo recording and simplifying system integration. The two products above have a market-leading allowable sensitivity error of ±1dB.
Eadaoin Doherty, Product Line Manager for Wolfson MEMS Microphones, stated, “The WM7121 and WM7132 are the industry’s first microphones to offer matching frequency response,” adding, “This feature, combined with matching of phase response and sensitivity, ensures easy integration, providing original audio recording and clear audio playback.”
Both the WM7121 and WM7132 utilize Wolfson's proprietary CMOS/MEMS membrane technology to provide high stability and performance in small, low-profile packages. Designed to withstand the high temperatures generated during automated flow soldering assembly processes, which can cause failures in conventional microphones, both components are ideal for mass production.
The data above is the result of the GSM Arena online survey.
