KDHC and LH Selected for This Year's Asia-Pacific Smart City Project

Competition to build post-COVID infrastructure will intensify
IDC Korea announced on the 1st that it selected a total of 19 best smart city projects as this year's winners at the 6th Smart City Asia Pacific Awards ( SCAPA ).

SCAPA uses IDC’s Smart City Development Index framework to select government and public institutions and private companies that are evaluated as outstanding in 14 functionally classified Smart City eService areas.
Domestically, Korea District Heating Corporation's 'IoT-based Heat Transmission Pipe Monitoring and Management System' and Korea Land and Housing Corporation's 'Platform-based Crime Safety City Service' were selected as the best projects in the 'Smart Water' and 'Public Safety – Smart Policing' categories, respectively.
IoT-based The heat transmission pipe monitoring and management system is a system built by Korea District Heating Corporation (KDHC) together with LG Uplus to remotely manage underground heat transmission pipes buried underground using special antenna equipment and excavation sensing devices to manage pipes that are over 20 years old.
KDHC used algorithm technology to enable sensing sensors to learn patterns of various situations and built a smart sensing solution by utilizing edge computing and IoT technology.
The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH)’s platform-based crime safety city service was recognized for its excellence in establishing various services, such as smartphone-based safe walking route navigation, Sejong Ansimi, and intelligent streetlights, to ensure citizens can safely reach their destinations when returning home late at night.
In addition, intelligent and facial recognition CCTVs have been installed for crime surveillance to monitor urban safety, the elderly with dementia, missing persons, and criminals in real time, and the efficiency of CCTV surveillance has been enhanced through AI-based automatic crime situation monitoring.
Kim Kyung-min, Senior Research Analyst at IDC Korea for Smart City Research, explained, “This year’s Smart City Asia Pacific Award winners were recognized for their excellence in using technology to expand key public utilities that enable resilient operations in the public sector.”
He added, “The COVID-19 pandemic is serving as an opportunity to assess the maturity of smart cities in the Asia-Pacific region, and competition to build urban infrastructure and services based on urban resilience and preparedness for the contactless culture of the post-COVID era will be fiercer than ever.”

Smart City Technology-Based COVID-19 Epidemiological Investigation System Launched
With the surge in confirmed COVID-19 cases, epidemiological investigation workload has also increased dramatically, raising the need for computational support systems to rapidly analyze large-scale data.
