Flash-based security controller obtains highest level of security certification from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI)
November 1, 2012, Seoul — Infineon Technologies (Korea Representative Director Seung-soo Lee) announced that its new flash-based security controller products have received the highest level of security certification (Common Criteria EAL 6+ (high)) from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), a German government agency. These products are the world's first flash-based security controllers to meet the highest level of security standards to date. Featuring “Integrity Guard” technology, these new SOLID FLASH™ security chips are suitable for contactless and contact-based applications requiring the highest level of security performance, such as government identification, contactless payments, and embedded systems. These products are new additions to the Infineon SLE 78 family, which has shipped over 100 million units worldwide.

These new SOLID FLASH security IC products are based on non-volatile memory (flash, EEPROM) technology and are manufactured using 90nm process technology. Unlike MASK ROM-based products, SOLID FLASH-based security controllers enable shorter time-to-market and can be flexibly programmed to suit various application types. Therefore, chip card manufacturers and system integration companies can respond quickly to changing market demands by leveraging fast delivery times and flexible designs.
Certified SOLID FLASH security controllers utilize “Integrity Guard,” a digital security technology developed for applications requiring the highest level of security. This technology is based on mathematically explainable security features, such as complete encryption of the entire data path and a sophisticated error detection system in which two central CPUs continuously monitor each other. The innovativeness of “Integrity Guard” digital security technology was recently recognized by being nominated for the German Future Prize 2012, awarded by the Federal President of Germany for achievements in technology and innovation.
In addition, these new security controllers provide very high communication speeds of up to 6.8 Mb/s (VHBR/Very High Bit Rate) for contactless applications. This enables reduced processing times for payment and identity verification processes and lowers personalization costs when producing cards or passports. Infineon is the first company to provide security ICs that meet the VHBR standard, which is scheduled for introduction soon.
