Discovery of more than 15 5G convergence services
Applying it to the public sector and expanding it to the private sector


The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 22nd that it will begin full-scale implementation of the '5G Convergence Service Discovery and Public Leadership Application' project, which is being promoted through the 3rd supplementary budget.

As part of the Digital New Deal, this project, with a budget of 40 billion won invested this year alone, aims to discover 5G convergence services based on mobile edge computing (MEC) technology and proactively apply them to the public sector, thereby establishing a 5G industrial ecosystem at an early stage.

MEC is a technology that processes data from a communications network at the service site without transmitting it to the central office, and serves as a 5G local hub that implements services specialized for the field.

The public contest to select the consortium (telecommunications carriers, device/terminal/service development companies, etc.) to carry out the project is scheduled to begin on July 22. For more detailed information, please refer to the National Information Society Agency (NIA) website .

Through this project, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to invest a total budget of 120 billion won by 2022 to discover more than 15 5G convergence services and support digital innovation in the public sector. At the same time, the Ministry plans to continue its efforts to build a 5G industry ecosystem, including the expansion of 5G convergence services to the private sector, edge computing R&D, and standardization.

Oh Sang-jin, Director General of the Ministry of Science and ICT's Information and Communication Industry Policy Bureau, said, "South Korea was the first in the world to commercialize 5G, but it faces another challenge: establishing a 5G industrial ecosystem at an early stage." He added, "We hope to create new convergence services based on MEC technology and lead the 5G industry."
