Infineon Launches Single-Chip 24GHz Radar Solution for Industrial and Commercial Sensor Systems
November 5, 2012, Seoul – Infineon Technologies (Korea Representative Director Seung-soo Lee) has launched a single-chip radar solution for industrial and commercial sensing applications. Manufactured using SiGe process technology and operating in the 24 GHz ISM band (24.0–24.25 GHz), this new product family consists of radar system-on-chip transceiver products and receiver-only chips that boast the highest level of integration on the market. This allows system designers to achieve cost and performance goals in a flexible manner to meet the needs of various types of applications.
The new product family consists of the following three devices: BGT24MTR11 (single transmit channel and single receive channel), BGT24MTR12 (single transmit channel and two receive channels), and BGTMR2 (two receive channels). By applying two or more receive channels, a system can be implemented that can capture objects more precisely at a wider angle.
Target motion sensing applications for these new device products include monitoring water levels in storage tanks (solid and liquid), lighting control, security systems, intelligent door openers, and automotive collision avoidance.
Using the new single-chip solutions available in standard QFN packages can save up to 30 percent of board space compared to discrete solutions on the market. These BGTMTRxx product families simplify design and shorten time-to-market by eliminating the need for external matching components and space-consuming RF transmission lines. Therefore, the new product family, which offers a compact design, system flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, is very useful when seeking to improve performance in existing applications or replace other technologies.
For energy-efficient lighting, a 24GHz radar system can detect moving objects or people within a designated area to adjust the intensity of street, industrial, and office lighting. Furthermore, the BGT24MTRxx product family provides high resolution, preventing the system from being deceived by liquid sloshing or dust, thereby enhancing the accuracy of tank and silo level measurement systems. Additionally, for door opening and closing systems, it can easily distinguish between people approaching a door and those passing by. In unauthorized intrusion alarm systems, the 24GHz radar system can achieve a room coverage area of up to 270m², compared to the 10m² coverage of conventionally used infrared (IR) systems.
The 3.3V BGT24MTR11 is capable of a detection range of up to 160 meters with a power consumption of 500mW and can achieve millimeter-level accuracy when used in short-range sensing applications. The BGT24MTRxx family, available in a standard VQFN package, does not require special equipment or processes for the manufacturing, assembly, and testing of radar systems.
