Microchip provides industry-leading accuracy
Launch of 6-Channel Analog Front-End for 3-Phase Energy Metering
6 x 16-/24-bit ADCs, integrated PGA, low drift voltage reference,
Integrated phase delay compensation and modulator output blocks
Microchip Technology (Country Manager for Korea: Byung-Don Han), a global leader in microcontroller, analog, and flash IP solutions, today unveiled its first high-accuracy, standalone 6-channel analog front-end (AFE) for three-phase energy metering. The newly announced MCP3903 AFE features a 16-/24-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and delivers industry-leading accuracy with an average Signal-to-Noise and Distortion (SINAD) ratio of 89 dB and an average Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of -99 dB. Additionally, it integrates a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), low-drift voltage reference, and phase delay compensation, reducing the need for additional components. This not only enhances design flexibility but also leads to cost savings. The MCP3903 AFE is suitable for utility and industrial markets, such as utility meters, power monitoring devices, and instrumentation.

As government regulations and trends in the smart metering sector align with advanced metering infrastructure, there has been a rapid increase in demand for products in the multi-phase metering field that offer high measurement accuracy while simplifying design and reducing costs. The MCP3903 is a highly accurate solution that integrates various functions to enhance this design flexibility. The MCP3903 integrates six 16-/24-bit delta-sigma ADCs, allowing it to sample six inputs simultaneously, making it suitable for three-phase power monitoring and metering. It also features industry-leading accuracy, enabling the implementation of more accurate products.

Bryan J. Liddiard, Vice President of Marketing at Microchip’s Analog and Interface Products business unit, stated, “The MCP3903 AFE is a solution that delivers exceptional accuracy performance for the ever-growing smart metering and power monitoring market. By utilizing this device, which integrates various functions, customers can further reduce design time and costs while increasing measurement accuracy compared to using competitor solutions.”
