November 21, 2012 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com , NASDAQ: ADI), a global leader in high-performance signal processing semiconductors, announced the release of two new flash LED driver products. The ADP1660 is a dual 750mA (total 1500mA) flash LED driver available in a 2.0mm x 1.6mm 12-ball WLCSP package. The ADP1649 is a single 1000mA LED driver available in a 2.0mm x 1.5mm 12-ball WLCSP package. Both products demonstrate superior efficiency in extending battery life for smartphones and tablet PCs while limiting battery usage during flash and torch modes.

Brian Wengreen, Marketing Manager for Power Management Products at Analog Devices, said, “As today’s smartphone applications increasingly add features and data rates, placing a greater burden on the battery, minimizing the current consumed from the battery in flash mode or torch mode is an important task.” “The ADP1649 and ADP1660 not only include the industry’s lowest RDS(on) FETs to increase efficiency and lower input current, but also integrate special features such as an algorithm that can autonomously regulate flash current when the battery level is low,” he said.

Key Features of the ADP 1649/ADP1660 Flash LED Driver
The ADP1649 and ADP1660 flash LED drivers include the ability to programmable synchronous inductive boost converters with switching frequencies of 1.5 MHz or 3 MHz, allowing for the use of low-cost 1 μH power inductors 1 mm high and input and output capacitors the size of 0603 cases, thereby reducing circuit board size. Additionally, these devices include an I2C communication port to enhance flexibility and safety control. This interface allows for programming timers, current, and status bit readbacks.

These devices include a Tx masking function to reduce the risk of battery overload when a power amplifier (PA) transmission burst and a flash event occur simultaneously. The Tx masking function allows the flash LED current to be rapidly reduced during a PA burst, thereby maintaining an acceptable load level on the battery.
