SMR HDD 'Ultrastar DC HC650 20TB' provided
Securing data center capacity, efficiency, and scalability


Western Digital announced on the 2nd that its host-managed SMR (Solid Magnetic Recording) HDD 'Ultrastar DC HC650 20TB' will be available on the Dropbox platform.
Dropbox utilizes Western Digital's exabyte-scale SMR HDDs. Through this, it provides services to over 600 million online customers.

The Ultrastar DC HC650, a 20TB HDD, enhances storage density and improves power efficiency. This provides a low-cost solution for scale-out enterprises and cloud data centers. Given the exabyte-scale demand for data centers and the associated asset and operating costs, customers can use SMR HDDs at a low cost in the long run due to their low cost per TB, high density, low power consumption, and high reliability.

In addition, it includes various innovative technologies such as the implementation of EAMR (Energy Assisted Magnetic Recording), the application of TSA (a technology that adjusts the head position using three drive units), and 5th generation HelioSeal technology.

Andrew Fong, Vice President of Engineering at Dropbox, said, “The importance of online tools and services is greater than ever today,” adding, “We expect that by introducing 20TB SMR HDDs, we will be able to reduce costs and provide greater value to our customers.”
