Freescale Announces Industry's First 77GHz Radar Transmitter for Automotive ADAS
November 28, 2012, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL, www.freescale.com , Korea Representative: Yeon-Ho Hwang) today announced the new Xtrinsic PRDTX11101 automotive radar transmitter for active safety applications such as adaptive cruise control. This industry-first 77GHz SiGe (Silicon Germanium) BiCMOS transmitter integrates a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) and power amplifier to provide superior control performance and reduce system design complexity and system costs.
Automotive active safety applications, or ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), are a rapidly growing market. According to a recently released Strategy Analytics report, the ADAS-related market, including radar applications, is expected to reach nearly $15 billion by 2019. These are systems that assist drivers in making better decisions and reduce automotive accidents and loss of life.
Freescale's semiconductors and software are accelerating the adoption of ADAS in major vehicles. Characterized by scalability, low power consumption, and high integration, Freescale offers the industry's most complete combination of microcontrollers, sensors, and analog devices for ADAS. Using Freescale technology, automotive equipment manufacturers can streamline the highly complex development processes of front, rear, and surround cameras, as well as radar for adaptive cruise control, and shorten time-to-market.
Adaptive cruise control is a technology implemented by radar that enables continuous monitoring of the vehicle's clock. Freescale's transmitter solution supports radar detection with a range of 200 meters and can determine the distance and approach speed between a vehicle and other objects, such as other vehicles, stationary objects, or pedestrians. If the driver does not react when the radar system detects an imminent collision, active braking can be applied to prevent an accident.

The new radar transmitter is manufactured using 0.18µm SiGe BiCMOS technology, enabling the integration of digital control functions along with millimeter-wave frequency capabilities into the CMOS. The integrated VCO and Power Amplifier (PA) stage alleviate system complexity and allow customers to reduce circuit board size. This transmitter also offers low power consumption and a wide tuning range along with low phase noise, resulting in higher signal fidelity and allowing the device to be tuned to a range optimized for specific conditions or applications.
