Arm's Neoverse Roadmap for Data Center Design
Provides cost savings, power efficiency, and improved computing performance
Project Cassini Supports Cloud-Native Software


The past decade has been a time of recognizing the value of data and focusing on computation. Companies have addressed their data processing needs simply by adopting cloud computing models. However, the rapid increase in power consumption in cloud data centers has necessitated a new approach.

On the 4th, Arm held the online 'Arm DevSummit 2020' conference for hardware and software developers around the world and announced the new 'Neoverse' platform and 'Project Cassini' initiative that will accelerate computing infrastructure innovation.

Neoverse is an infrastructure processor platform announced by Arm in 2018, designed to reduce costs, improve power efficiency, and increase computing performance. AWS and Ampere have developed server processors based on the Neoverse N1, called the Graviton 2 instance and the Altra, respectively.

Additionally, as of June of this year, Japan's Fugaku, the world's fastest supercomputer, runs on Fujitsu's A64FX processor, which is based on Arm's ARMv8.2-A architecture. Marvell's server processor, the ThunderX3, also features up to 96 custom Arm v8.3 cores.

Arm stated, "The reason many companies are leveraging our solutions is because they can achieve more compute results with the same amount of power." The Neoverse V1 platform, announced by Arm in September, delivers more than 50% improved single-thread performance compared to the N1 platform.

At the conference, Arm announced Project Cassini, which extends the value of the Neoverse platform. Project Cassini, an open and collaborative initiative, is designed to accelerate cloud-native software development across the Arm edge ecosystem. Project Cassini provides standards, security, and references to support the construction of Arm platforms optimized for diverse workloads.

“With each new generation of the Neoverse platform, we’re delivering more compute per watt,” said Chris Bergey, senior vice president and general manager of the Infrastructure Business Unit at Arm. “Project Cassini, designed to reduce infrastructure design complexity, establish standards, and improve safety, will usher developers into a more flexible era of edge computing.”

Meanwhile, Arm DevSummit 2020 will be held until the 5th.
