December 06, 2012, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (hereinafter ST), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications, announced that Carmelo Papa, General Manager of the Industrial and Multisegment Business Unit and Senior Vice President, has been re-elected as Chairman of the European Smart Systems Platform (EPoSS) for a two-year consecutive term. The 2012-2014 EPoSS government nomination was confirmed by the EPoSS Secretariat late last month.
The European Smart Systems Integration Technology Platform, EPoSS, is an industry-led initiative that aims to strengthen capabilities within Europe to bring innovation to smart systems integration, in addition to the integration of microsystems and nanotechnology. EPoSS serves to bring together all companies, public and private research institutions, universities, representatives of the European Commission, and other relevant initiatives within Europe involved in systems integration.
Carmelo Papa, Chairman of EPoSS, stated, “Comprehensive R&D cooperation is an indispensable element for Europe to achieve a smart, sustainable, and inclusive economy by 2020. EPoSS will play a key role in the EU’s growth strategy over the next decade. Europe is formulating plans and dedicating efforts to smart systems and related technologies to address global challenges such as health, aging, and sustainable mobility, and EPoSS is committed to assisting and accelerating this.”
During his second term as head of EPoSS, Carmelo Papa plans to further strengthen EPoSS's role within major European initiatives such as 'green cars,' 'Internet of Things (IoT),' and 'factories of the future.' Furthermore, it will lead the 'EPoSS Strategic Research Agenda' to identify new challenges such as robotics and establish development directions in both technology and systems.
Carmelo Papa will also continue his role within ST, taking overall responsibility for the development of various products, including sensors, power and analog chips, microcontrollers, non-volatile memory for specific applications, and smart card ICs. Carmelo Papa is a member of ST’s Corporate Strategy Committee and the Board of Directors of ST New Ventures.
