TI Launches New Analog Front-End to Extend Battery Life for Portable ECG Equipment
TI Korea (CEO Kent Jeon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) December 5, 2012 – TI (CEO Kent Jeon) announced the addition of the ADS1293, a 24-bit, 3-channel analog front-end, to its award-winning ADS1298 analog front-end (AFE) family. Designed for ECG measurement applications such as battery-powered portable ECG solutions, Holter monitors, and wireless patient monitoring devices, the ADS1293 boasts the industry's best power efficiency. Furthermore, as the first in the ADS1298 family to support 1 to 5 leads with a single AFE, it enables significant reductions in the size, power consumption, and overall cost of scalable medical instrumentation systems. The ADS1293 allows each channel to be individually programmed with specific sample rates and bandwidths, enabling configuration optimization for enhanced performance and minimized power consumption. TI has added the WEBENCH® Medical AFE Designer tool to its continuously growing WEBENCH design tool family. WEBENCH Medical AFE Designer is a tool that simplifies design using ADS1293 and helps reduce work time, enabling easy AFE design and configuration online. By downloading configuration data to the ADS1293 Evaluation Module (EVM) after design, design time, which previously took weeks or months, can be drastically reduced to just a few minutes.
Key Features and Advantages of ADS1293
• Extended battery life with minimized power consumption:
o With 300µW power consumption per channel, this is 85% lower than other integrated solutions.
o Simultaneous integration of digital ECG and heart rate signals into a single channel, eliminating the need for a dedicated heart rate channel and reducing power consumption.
o Integrates comprehensive error detection capabilities with built-in warning pins, eliminating the need for the controller to continuously poll error conditions.
o Specific unused function blocks can be shut down individually
• Simplifies design and saves board space through high integration: An optimized signal path gain stage eliminates the need for analog filters, and board space is saved through the integration of three 24-bit Delta-Sigma Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs), four low-noise instrumentation amplifiers, EMI-enhanced inputs, a Right Leg Drive (RLD) amplifier, lead-off detection, and Wilson and Goldberger terminals.
• System Design Flexibility: Achieves enhanced design flexibility by allowing programmable DC and AC lead-off detection settings.
Tools and Support
The ADS1293EVM is available for purchase at a price of $99. The development tool for this evaluation module provides a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) using interactive block diagrams, enabling quick and convenient testing of various different system configurations. It can capture and store ECG and heart rate data, allowing for post-processing. The ADS1293 development tool is also available online through WEBENCH® Medical AFE Designer.
