Expanding business by acquiring Wi-Fi IP technology assets


Nordic has acquired a Wi-Fi specialist, adding Wi-Fi technology to its existing Bluetooth and cellular IoT capabilities.

Nordic Semiconductor announced today that it will acquire the entire Ensigma Wi-Fi development team and Ensigma-related Wi-Fi IP technology assets from Imagination Technologies.

The acquisition includes a significant portion of Imagination's staff in Taiwan, the United Kingdom, India and Sweden. About 15% of these are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) experts, which is expected to further strengthen Nordic's existing BLE team.

“Since we acquired the IP rather than a ready-to-sell Wi-Fi device, there won’t be any immediate changes, but it will enable us to add Wi-Fi functionality to future Nordic products,” said Svein-Egil Nielsen, Nordic’s CTO.

“This acquisition gives Nordic the latest in low-power wireless and battery-powered IoT devices,” says Kjetil Holstad, Director of Product Management. “We will continue to work with other key standards bodies and organizations as an active member of the Wi-Fi Alliance to maximize the potential of Wi-Fi in future low-power wireless applications.”

“Wi-Fi was born in the consumer space, but is now rapidly moving into the industrial IoT space,” said Simon Beresford-Wylie, CEO of Imagination. “Imagination is more focused on graphics, vision and AI processing, so we are selling our Wi-Fi IP business to a company that is focused on wireless connectivity.”
