Ability to recognize damaged barcodes in dark environments


Cognex announced on the 19th that Flensburger AG has adopted its image-based barcode reader, the DataMan 360, to optimize its logistics center operations.

Flensburger Brewery, a German food and beverage company, processes 172,000 liters of 17 different bottled beverages daily at its logistics center. This necessitated a solution capable of handling large volumes at high speeds.

Previously, forklift drivers at logistics centers used portable laser scanners to directly read the barcodes on pallets loaded with beverages. However, this took a lot of time as rework was sometimes required due to damage to the barcode labels and insufficient light.

Jetschke, a German company that supplies pallet forklifts to the Flensburg logistics center, installed the Cognex DataMan 360, a fixed-mount barcode reader, on the forklift mast to build an automatic pallet EAN (European Article Number) code recognition system to improve work efficiency.

DataMan 360 can be used without a PC. With the reader scan mode enabled, the forklift driver only needs to worry about moving the pallets.

Featuring intelligent image buffering and increased image storage, the DataMan 360 is equipped with an illumination ring to read all codes in low-light environments, even those with poorly printed 1D/2D codes. It is also designed to withstand strong vibration and shock.
