Cypress Announces "New PSoC® 5LP Product Family" with ARM® Cortex™-M3 Processor
Cypress Korea (Branch Manager Lim Young-do, www.cypress.com) has announced the standardized PSoC® 5LP programmable system-on-chip product family.
The new PSoC® 5LP devices provide flexibility for designing custom systems with outstanding high-performance programmable analog capabilities, the best ADC available in ARM® Cortex™-M3-based devices, and over 80 pre-verified production-ready components for PSoC Creator™ IDE.
Another class-leading feature includes 0.5-V startup with integrated Boost, full-function analog operation at 1.71-5.5-V, and the industry's widest 0.5-5.5V operating range. These capabilities are opening a new era of applications requiring single-cell battery performance and highly precise analog functionality that goes beyond fixed-function MCUs. PSoC 5LP devices are currently in production, and more detailed information including datasheets, application notes, and development kits is available at www.cypress.com/go/PSoC5LP.
When Precision Measurement Really Matters
PSoC 5LP provides programmable analog precision with a differential 12-bit SAR and 20-bit DelSig ADC supported by a class-leading 1.024V±0.1% precision internal voltage reference. The best-in-class ADC includes 62 channels, full-function analog at 1.71~5.5V, and the widest input signal range from ARM Cortex-M devices at 0~5.5V. A variety of PSoC Creator programmable analog components include OpAmps, comparators, transimpedance amplifiers (TIA), programmable gain amplifiers (PGA), mixers, segment LCD, CapSense® touch sensing, DAC, analog Muxes, and more. All of these components are configurable to meet individual application requirements for delivering a single-chip solution.
When Low Power Alone Isn't Enough
PSoC 5LP is designed to deliver functionality beyond just standard low-power consumption features. The new PSoC 5LP device consumes only 300 nA in maximum sleep mode and can wake up on IOs while maintaining the CPU core, SRAM, and device configuration state. Ideal for single-cell battery operation, Cypress's Boost technology allows designers to maximize power efficiency and scale down as low as 0.5V. Unlike fixed-function MCUs, PSoC enables designers to customize each peripheral component, further reducing power consumption and eliminating power waste from unnecessary functions.
When Fixed-Function MCUs Fail to Deliver
PSoC 5LP provides programmable analog and digital functionality with flexible routing and interconnect from easy-to-use components within PSoC Creator. Designers can easily build their own custom embedded controllers while implementing standard and proprietary protocols that are tolerant to specification changes. By customizing logic functions, peripherals, analog front-ends, and analog subsystems, designers can achieve greater system integration and reduce bill-of-materials (BOM) costs. With over 80 pre-verified production-ready components, PSoC enables designers to easily solve complex problems.
PSoC Creator allows users to configure PSoC programmable hardware as a personalized single-chip solution. The free IDE comes with production-ready components and APIs for easy and rapid device configuration, and enables users to create and replicate their own custom components.
"Precision measurement and low power consumption are important features for embedded designers, but until now they have been mutually exclusive. PSoC 5LP changes this by enabling customized high-precision analog applications that can run on single-cell batteries, going beyond the capabilities of fixed-function MCUs," said Lim Young-do, Branch Manager of Cypress Korea.
What MCU Cannot Do but PSoC Can
PSoC devices adopt a highly combinable system-on-chip architecture for embedded control design, providing functionality equivalent to flash-based field-programmable ASICs without lead-time or NRE penalties. PSoC devices integrate configurable analog and digital circuits controlled by an on-chip microcontroller, enabling enhanced design change capability and reduced component count. Additionally, a single PSoC device can integrate over 100 peripheral functions while reducing customer design time, board space, and power consumption, while improving system quality and reducing system costs.
Flexible PSoC resources enable firmware-based modifications throughout the design, verification, production, and post-launch phases, ensuring products remain competitive in the future. PSoC's unique flexibility shortens design cycle time and enables subsequent feature enhancements. All PSoC devices also support dynamic reconfiguration, allowing designers to modify internal resources while utilizing fewer components to perform a given task.
