Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, 3 Smart Green Industrial Complex Project Units
Launched in the order of Yeosu, Jeollanam-do - Gwangju Advanced Technology - Daegu Seongseo
Linked with the major reorganization of industrial complexes in each region, it serves as a base industrial complex.


The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the "Jeonnam Yeosu Smart Green Industrial Complex Launch Ceremony" at the Yeosu National Industrial Complex in South Jeolla Province on the 27th. This event marked the inaugural launch of three Smart Green Industrial Complexes designated last year and launching this year. The Gwangju Advanced Industrial Complex Launch Ceremony will be held on the 28th, and the Daegu Seongseo Project Launch Ceremony will be held on February 3rd.

To promote smart manufacturing and innovation in industrial complexes, which account for 67.3% of domestic manufacturing production, 67.0% of exports, and 48.6% of employment (as of 2018), the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy expanded and reorganized the existing "Smart Industrial Complex Leading Project" into the "Smart Green Industrial Complex Strategy" in September 2020.

Smart Green Industrial Complex is a concept that grafts digital elements of smart industrial complexes onto existing industrial complexes and expands upon the Korean New Deal elements. Its goal is to create a future-oriented innovative industrial complex that combines digital and green elements, going beyond the smartening of individual companies within the industrial complex to the smartening of the industrial complex as a whole.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has currently selected seven smart green industrial complexes ('19 △Gyeonggi Banwol-Sihwa △Gyeongnam Changwon, '20 △Incheon Namdong △Gyeongbuk Gumi), and plans to expand to 10 in 2022 and 15 in 2025. These three Smart Green Industrial Complex Business Units will be in charge of the future development of smart green industrial complexes in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, Gwangju Advanced Industrial Complex, and Daegu Seongseo Industrial Complex.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the "industrial complex overhaul" in the region where the industrial complex is located, the Smart Green Industrial Complex will serve as a bridge between central government agencies and local governments, enabling it to serve as a hub industrial complex. The project team will be established within the industrial complex, with participation from the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, local governments under their jurisdiction, regional innovation organizations, and local universities.

Each business unit plans to develop a regional smart green industrial complex implementation plan that reflects local characteristics. The Yeosu Industrial Complex in South Jeolla Province plans to build on its current core petrochemical industry by evolving into a high-value-added fine chemical industry. It will also establish an intelligent, integrated control system to prevent chemical safety accidents within the complex.

Gwangju Advanced Industrial Complex is building a future vehicle platform and fostering related smart human resources to transform the automobile and optical industries into a future-oriented automobile industry that integrates AI. The Daegu Seongseo Industrial Complex will advance the textile and machinery industries into functional textile industries and promote the transition to new industries such as electric vehicles and robotics.

Each industrial complex will also promote digitalization and greening of its industrial complex through common projects such as establishing innovation data centers and smart energy platforms.

This year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will develop specialized strategies for each industrial complex together with seven business units.

The 10 major projects of the Smart Green Industrial Complex will be categorized into three categories: common basic projects, specialized projects by industrial complex, and projects to improve living conditions, and will be platformized. Companies will be supported to utilize data to achieve results such as reduced product development costs and increased productivity.

Additionally, in conjunction with the industrial complex overhaul, we plan to select three additional smart green industrial complexes and focus our capabilities on ensuring that the selected smart green industrial complexes serve as hubs for regional development.
