Maxim Integrated Introduces Industry's Smallest Bipolar Beyond-the-Rails ADC
San Jose, California, December 12, 2012—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) announced the introduction of the MAX11166 and MAX11167, the industry's smallest bipolar 5V, 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) products.
Offered in a compact 9mm² package, the MAX11166 and MAX11167 are the only 12-pin 16-bit bipolar ADC products that integrate a buffer and internal reference, reducing costs and saving at least 88 percent board space compared to competitive products. By adopting Beyond-the-Rails™ technology, these highly integrated ADC products can support ±5V input signals using a single +5V rail. Consequently, this technology eliminates the need for negative power supplies and simplifies system design. Consuming 19.5mW at 500ksps and 1µA in shutdown mode, these ADC products are well-suited for applications requiring precise measurement such as data acquisition systems (DAS), industrial control systems/process control, medical equipment, and automated test equipment (ATE).
The MAX11166 and MAX11167 communicate through an SPI-compatible serial interface using 2.5V, 3V, 3.3V, and 5V logic, with sampling rates of 500ksps and 250ksps, respectively. In multi-channel simultaneous sampling applications, multiple ADCs can be daisy-chained using this serial interface. The serial interface also provides a "busy" indicator option to simplify system synchronization and timing. Maxim's proprietary input charge pump architecture enables direct sampling of high-impedance sources, eliminating the need for external analog buffers in some applications to drive the ADC input.
