LG Innotek and Microsoft Collaborate on ToF Development for Azure

LG Innotek announced on the 8th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Microsoft (MS) for cooperation in the development and supply of Time of Flight (ToF) modules dedicated to the Azure cloud.

The ToF module is a core component of 3D sensing cameras that measures distance based on the time it takes for light emitted toward an object to bounce back, thereby recognizing the object's three-dimensionality, spatial information, and movement. When integrated into smart devices, it enables biometric authentication, motion recognition, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) functions.

Through this collaboration, LG Innotek is developing a ToF module for the Azure cloud platform. It will also supply this module to Azure cloud customers through Microsoft. The ToF module is mounted on wearable devices and serves as a data input device linked to the Azure cloud, with mass production targeted for the second half of this year.

Along with providing its own 3D sensing technology, MS supports LG Innotek with the Azure ecosystem, which consists of hardware and software vendors, system integrators (SIs), and customers necessary for the development of new services. Both companies also agreed to cooperate in finding new customers.

Meanwhile, LG Innotek first introduced its 3D sensing module brand, 'InnoXensing,' in 2019. It is reported that Microsoft was the first to propose this agreement.
