Intersil Launches Automotive Synchronous Dual Step-Down DC/DC Regulator Meeting AEC-Q100 Certification Standards

July 25, 2011 – Intersil, a global leader in the design and production of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, announced today the launch of the 'ISL78228,' an automotive synchronous dual step-down DC/DC regulator certified to the AEC-Q100 quality standard of the Automotive Electronics Association (AEC). The ISL78228 is an upgraded version of the company's ISL8088 that meets AEC-Q100 certification standards and is designed to provide rated output in remote safety surveillance cameras, infotainment systems, control modules, and other space-constrained automotive applications.

The ISL78228 provides a sustained current of up to 800mA from each of its two independent outputs. The product offers an input voltage range of 2.75V to 5.5V, enabling operation with typical 3.3V to 5.0V automotive supplies. Additionally, internal current mode compensation provides fast transient response and enables 100% duty cycle operation for low dropout. This ultimately simplifies circuit design by reducing the need for external compensation components.

The ISL78228 operates at a switching frequency of 2.25 MHz and can be synchronized up to 4 MHz. This allows designers to use small, inexpensive inductors and capacitors, and each channel is optimized to provide an output voltage as low as 0.6 V. In addition, the product includes integrated 2ms digital soft start and Power Good output functions. The enable pin provides power sequencing, and the soft stop function allows the output capacitor to discharge when switching is interrupted.

The product's low 30uA standby current minimizes power consumption in standby mode. Offering high efficiency of over 90%, the ISL78228 in a small package is ideal for ultra-small applications requiring rated output inside automobiles.
