Cypress Korea (Branch Manager Lim Young-do www.cypress.com) announced that Cypress has integrated Ramtron International's F-RAM (ferroelectric random access memory) into its product portfolio, thereby providing the industry's broadest integration level for high-speed-write nonvolatile memory.
F-RAM is the industry's lowest-power nonvolatile memory product that complements Cypress's world's fastest nonvolatile SRAM (nvSRAM). The new combination of F-RAM and nvSRAM can be utilized in various applications requiring data retention when power is lost.
Billions of Cypress nvSRAM and Ramtron F-RAM products have been combined and shipped globally.
The merger of Cypress and Ramtron was officially completed on November 20, 2012. Cypress is maintaining Ramtron's part numbers, which represent the industry's broadest F-RAM integration level, to assist existing F-RAM customers. Supply will not be discontinued for over 95% of production parts, including all popular serial F-RAM memory and accompanying processors. Along with popular serial and parallel interface memory, Cypress's nonvolatile memory portfolio also includes wireless memory products commonly used in RFID tags and integrated products that combine nonvolatile memory with real-time clock in a single package.
"Ramtron developed F-RAM technology with industry-leading performance, and Cypress is committed to supporting these products with manufacturing expertise and a global sales team and distribution network. Additionally, Cypress plans to invest R&D resources in F-RAM technology as an important part of the memory business," said Lim Young-do, Branch Manager of Cypress Korea.
"F-RAM adds significant functionality and diversity to Cypress's nonvolatile memory portfolio. As a product complementing Cypress nvSRAM products, the addition of F-RAM provides our customers with optimal solutions for speed and power consumption across diverse end markets," said Babak Taheri, Vice President of Cypress Nonvolatile Products Business Unit.
F-RAM and nvSRAM are inherently nonvolatile and require no battery backup. Additionally, F-RAM memory cells inherently provide 10 trillion cycle endurance, fast single-cycle and symmetric read/write speeds, low energy consumption, gamma radiation resistance, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. These characteristics make them suitable for various applications including automotive, smart meters, medical devices, ePOS and printers.
Cypress nvSRAM is manufactured using the company's S8™ 0.13-micron SONOS (Silicon Oxide Nitride Oxide Silicon) embedded nonvolatile memory technology that enables larger integration levels and improved access time and performance. nvSRAM is characterized by unlimited read, write and 20-year data retention recall cycles. These capabilities make it an optimal solution for applications requiring continuous high-speed writes of data and absolute nonvolatile data security, including RAID, SSD, industrial automation, computing and gaming applications.
