Intersil Launches Single-Cell Boost Converter Delivering High Output Density and Efficiency for Battery-Power Applications

January 10, 2013 – Intersil, a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced the launch of a family of boost converters featuring exceptional output density and efficiency. The newly introduced boost converter is expected to be particularly useful for single-cell lithium-ion battery products, including USB OTG (on-the-go) functionality.
The ISL9113 is an integrated synchronous boost converter that provides high output voltage of 460mA/mm2, and can be used not only with a fixed 5V output voltage but also with variable output. Additionally, the 1.3A integrated synchronous MOSFET delivers 5V at 500mA from a single-cell lithium-ion battery, making it applicable to external peripherals connected to the USB port of tablet PCs or smartphones.
ISL9113 Features:
• Low-profile inductors and capacitors are possible due to 1.8MHz switching frequency
• Battery life can be extended up to 95% maximum due to low MOSFET on-resistance
• 20uA quiescent current provides high efficiency at light load conditions
• Available in a very small 0.8mm x 1.36mm WLCSP package or 2mm x 2mm DFN package
Regarding ISL9111 and ISL9111A
The ISL9113 succeeds Intersil's renowned low input voltage and synchronous boost converters, the ISL9111 and ISL9111A. Their 1A integrated synchronous MOSFET delivers 100mA from a single-cell alkaline battery. Additionally, the ISL9111 and ISL9111A are useful for both rechargeable and non-rechargeable battery applications. The ISL9111 internally includes UVLO (under-voltage lockout) functionality that prevents the converter from operating below an input voltage of 0.7V, preventing over-discharge of the connected battery. The ISL9111A also features this same disable function to extend the usable lifetime of non-rechargeable single-cell batteries.
Pricing and Availability
The ISL9113 is currently available in a 2mm x 2mm 8-lead small DFN package and a 0.8mm x 1.36mm 6-bump WLCSP package. Pricing starts from $1.39 each based on quantities of 6,000 units. The ISL9111 and ISL9111A are available in a 6-lead SOT-23 package and priced from $1.20 each based on quantities of 3,000 units.
