Cypress Korea (Country Manager Young-do Lim, www.cypress.com ) announced that Leap Motion ( www.leapmotion.com ) has selected Cypress’s EZ-USB® FX3 solution for its 3-D motion sensing and control technology.
Leap Motion controllers deliver the world's most accurate 3D motion control technology, providing exceptional precision, consistency, and low latency. Cypress's programmable FX3 solution provides Leap Motion with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface to transmit image sensor data to a computer, offering beneficial real-time tracking capabilities for an outstanding user experience.
Selected as one of the "Top 10 Technology Innovations of 2012" by Popular Mechanics, the Leap Motion controller creates a three-dimensional interaction space that allows users to control their computers with the movements of their hands and fingers. Leap Motion captures the precise movements of all ten fingers in 1/100th of a millimeter, smaller than the tip of a pin. The USB port of the Leap Motion controller utilizes the Cypress FX3 solution and can be connected to any Mac or PC computer with either USB 2.0 or 3.0 functionality.
The Leap Motion controller inside the small form factor includes two image sensors that work with the Cypress FX3 device to capture 16-bit wide data. The Cypress FX3 solution packetizes the data into the USB Video Class (UVC) format and transmits it to the user's computer via either a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port. Leap Motion's patented 3-D motion control software processes the data in real time to generate 3-D motion control.
"Leap Motion sets high standards when evaluating component suppliers for our controllers. Our exceptional software requires hardware that provides very fast processing power to deliver a level of real-time 3-D motion control that users have never experienced before. The programming capabilities of the Cypress FX3 solution helped us create a simple yet sophisticated hardware design for Leap Motion devices, as well as keep BOM (bill-of-material) costs low," said Michael Buckwald, co-founder and CEO of Leap Motion.
Cypress is pleased to partner with Leap Motion to deliver its innovative 3-D motion controllers to the consumer market. “The FX3 provides a one-chip solution that reduces the hardware complexity of Leap Motion devices and offers sufficient flexibility for customization and future upgrades,” said Lim Young-do, General Manager of Cypress Korea.
Shipments of Leap Motion controllers will begin in early 2013, and pre-orders can be placed at www.leapmotion.com .
The Cypress EZ-USB FX3 is the industry's only programmable USB 3.0 peripheral controller solution. Additionally, the EZ-USB FX3 features a fully configurable General Programmable Interface (GPIF™II) that can be programmed in 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit configurations. GPIF™II enables the FX3 to directly interface with any processor, ASIC, FPGA, and up to two image sensors. Furthermore, the GPIF Designer, a graphical user interface (GUI) toolkit, helps system designers configure the GPIF interface according to their needs. Along with this, the FX3's on-chip ARM9 CPU core, combined with 512 KB of RAM, delivers 200 MIPS of computational capability. For more information regarding the Cypress EZ-USB FX3 solution
