January 16, 2013 – Broadcom, a global wired and wireless semiconductor company, today announced the industry's first 5G Wi-Fi connected IPTV set-top box (STB) platform. Broadcom's 5G Wi-Fi technology, which supports the latest IEEE 802.11.ac standard, is combined with IP set-top box system-on-chip (SoC) technology to enable telecommunications operators to wirelessly deliver stable, high-definition (HD) content and services to more locations within the home.

Dan Marotta, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Broadband Communications Group, stated, “Broadcom’s ability to develop the 802.11ac IPTV platform will help telecommunications operators deliver new TV programs and services to more screens in the home,” adding, “Furthermore, Broadcom technology will enable direct content sharing from mobile devices to large-screen TVs with a single small box that can be installed wirelessly anywhere in the home.”

Broadcom combines the BCM43526 5G Wi-Fi solution with the BCM7241 IPTV STB SoC to enable operators to provide stable carrier-grade coverage throughout the home for various services such as multi-room DVR, browsing, gaming, and OTT (Over-The-Top).

The BCM7241 provides a total processing power of 5,000 DMIPS, 1080p60 decoding, and OpenGL 2.0 support to realize a powerful solution for multi-room DVRs, enabling new services such as browsing, gaming, and OTT.
