5G MEC applied to the Gwangju May 18 Memorial Cultural Center
Detecting emergencies without delay using 5G MEC technology.

LG Uplus announced on the 17th that it had won a contract to develop and apply 5G convergence services using mobile edge computing (MEC) to public facilities such as the Gwangju May 18 Memorial Cultural Center.

MEC is a network technology that processes data closer to the user, such as at a base station or exchange, without transmitting it to the backbone network or data center (IDC). This technology reduces the traffic load on the backbone network and reduces latency for specific services.

A 5G MEC-based AI guidance/quarantine robot will be operational at the Gwangju May 18 Memorial Cultural Center in the second half of this year. Equipped with indoor positioning LiDAR, the robot will monitor visitors for fever and indoor fires, and use AI video analysis to identify emergencies, such as fainting, in real time. In the event of an emergency, the robot will use its stored voice to request assistance from nearby residents and use two-way communication to notify managers of the situation.

Information on visiting the May 18 Memorial Cultural Center is provided through a screen installed on the robot, and customized guidance services are also provided to visitors. Within the May 18 Memorial Park, "smart poles" equipped with complex IoT sensors, including fever-detecting CCTV cameras, will be installed to monitor visitor safety. Furthermore, a 5G network-based media wall will be installed. Made of translucent glass that does not obstruct the park's landscape, it will provide real-time information on quarantine measures, guidance messages, and performance events.

Furthermore, the U+ Gwangju MEC Center complies with European Telecommunications Standardization Institute (ETSI) standards and provides Gwangju Smart City with an MEC platform based on domestic equipment and open-source software. Furthermore, U+ plans to expand 5G MEC application cases through various government projects, including 5G smart cities, industrial complexes, and ports.
