Announcing a New Embedded Flash Platform for Standards

Western Digital (WD) announced a new embedded flash platform for the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 3.1 standard that will support mobile, automotive, IoT, AR, VR, drones, etc. at the 'Flash Perspectives Event' held in California, USA on the 26th (local time).

The WD UFS 3.1 platform meets the JEDEC UFS 3.1 specification and delivers reliable speed, reliability, and versatility for designing lightweight, compact solutions. WD's vertical integration capabilities, encompassing NAND optimization, firmware, controller design, software, and drivers, enable it to design application-specific solutions based on a single UFS 3.1 architecture.

The new UFS 3.1 platform delivers up to 90% improved sequential write performance compared to the previous generation. This supports maximum 5G and Wi-Fi 6 download speeds, providing a superior user experience when using high-quality media files such as 8K video. It also supports high-performance application functions including continuous photo shooting.

WD has completed development of products based on the UFS 3.1 platform and is currently working with hardware partners to ensure compatibility with upcoming hardware ecosystem solutions. Products based on the new UFS 3.1 platform are expected to be released in the second half of 2021.
