TI Launches Power Management Front-End Chip to Extend Battery Life for ARM® Cortex A15-Based Designs

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) – February 7, 2013 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) has launched the industry's first single-chip front-end power management unit (PMU) for battery-powered applications based on ARM Cortex A9 and A15 processors. The TPS65090 power management integrated circuit integrates all power management functions and maximizes power efficiency, enabling extended battery life in portable electronic devices by up to 20%, simplified design, and reduced board space by up to 60% compared to discrete solutions. The innovative new front-end PMU integrates a 4A switching PowerPath charger, three 5A DC/DC step-down converters, seven load switches, two always-on LDOs, and a 10-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC).
Key Features and Advantages of TPS65090
• 20% Extended Battery Life: Achieves up to 95% efficiency at 8V–12V output voltage for 2–3 series battery cells
• Highly Integrated and Ultra-Small Solution Size: Integrating 15 functions into a single front-end circuit reduces the Bill of Materials (BOM) and achieves a solution size 60% smaller than discrete IC solutions.
• Fast Charging: Charging time reduced by more than half with the integrated 4A multi-cell switching charger
• Enhanced Power Control: The power switch controls each major subsystem independently, and the 10-bit ADC monitors power consumption easily and accurately.
Supply timing, packaging, and price
The TPS65090 is supplied in a multi-row QFN package with a recommended retail price of $4.95 for a quantity of 1,000. Additionally, designers can order the TPS65090EVM evaluation module and download the related application note (“Extend battery life by connecting TPS65090 to a power-free AC adapter”) to enable faster design evaluation and reduced time-to-market.
