Analog Devices Announces High-Performance Automotive Radar AFE IC for Safe Driving

July 20, 2011 – Automotive safety systems are evolving from passive systems, such as seat belts, airbags, and collision detection, to active detection networks capable of collision prevention and accident avoidance. In particular, radar is one of the promising active safety improvements that can significantly reduce the number and severity of driving accidents caused by driver inattention.

Analog Devices ( www.analog.com ), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors and a leader in the global data converter market, announced the 'AD8283', a high-performance, affordable automotive radar analog front-end (AFE) IC for safe driving. ADI is also making a name for itself in the semiconductor field related to automotive safety functions. For example, ADI’s highly integrated inertial sensing iMEMS® technology has contributed significantly to making airbags the standard specification for automotive safety for the past 15 years.
The AD8283 automotive radar AFE IC, boasting a high integration rate, features receive path signal conditioning and data capture circuitry that enables end systems for Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), blind-spot detection, and other radar-based detection and prevention applications.

High-performance radar with AEC-Q100 certified IC
The 6-channel AD8283 is an AEC-Q100 certified product that operates in an automotive temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. In addition, it improves the capabilities required by conventional radars to verify target sizes and allocate time by decoding to receive a higher number of transmitted signals and accurately identify and classify targets.
The AD8283 integrates a 12-bit 80 MSPS analog-to-digital converter, a 67 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and a 68 dB SFDR, and provides on-chip signal conditioning capabilities including a programmable gain amplifier, a third-order low-pass elliptic filter, and a low-noise amplifier. Additionally, gain can be programmed via SPI in 6 dB increments over a range of 16 dB to 34 dB, and it delivers input reference voltage noise performance of less than 3.5 nV/rtHz when the gain value is at maximum. In addition, the AD8283 has a selectable input impedance of 200 Ω or 200 kΩ and consumes only 170 mW of power per channel.
