TI Launches Sensorless BLDC Motor Driver Capable of Driving Motors in Just Minutes

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) February 21, 2013 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) has launched two 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor drivers that can reduce motor design time from months to just minutes. Conventional BLDC motor designs required 5 to 10 components depending on the firmware. The new sensorless 5V, 680mA DRV10866 and 12V, 1.5A DRV11873 require only a single component and do not require separate firmware development, thereby significantly reducing board space and system costs and accelerating time-to-market. Additionally, these devices minimize operating voltage and standby current, reducing power consumption by up to 75%. Key Features and Benefits of DRV10866 and DRV11873
• High Integration: A single motor driver that eliminates the need for external gate drivers, inverters, position detection and feedback, microcontrollers (MCUs), and firmware, saving board space and system costs while reducing development time.
• Motors can be driven in just minutes: Motors can be driven without coding and with only a few external components through TI's InstaSPIN-FAN™ motor solution, a fully protected and rugged solution.
• Up to 75% reduction in power consumption: Extends battery life for portable devices such as electric toothbrushes and razors with a wide operating voltage range of 1.65V to 5.5V and a low quiescent current of 5µA.
• Flexibility to enhance control capabilities: When used with TI's MSP430™ MCU, it supports designs requiring user interfaces and closed-loop rate control.
• Robustness, Reliability, and Complete Protection: Enhances system reliability by integrating advanced on-chip protection features such as overcurrent, overheating, shoot-through, and undervoltage lockout.
Tools and Support
The DRV10866EVM and DRV11873EVM evaluation modules (EVMs) include a simple TLC555 timer, frequency generator output, PWM input, and wiring to the motor along with a motor driver, allowing for quick and convenient evaluation without the need to write code. These EVMs provide schematics and Gerber files, and the recommended retail price is $25.
In addition, you can ask questions and receive answers from TI experts at the motor driver forum of the TI E2E™ community.
Package, supply time, and price
DRV10866 and DRV11837 are available in a 3mm x 3mm SON package and a 16-pin TSSOP, with recommended retail prices of $0.39 and $0.89, respectively, based on a quantity of 1,000.
