TI Launches Industry's Smallest Point-of-Load (POL) DC/DC Converter for Harsh Environments

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) February 20, 2013 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) has launched two of the industry's smallest monolithic point-of-load (POL) DC/DC converters for use in harsh environments such as radiation-resistant, geological, heavy industry, oil, and gas applications. The 6.3V, 6A TPS50601 and the 6.3V, 3A TPS50301 are synchronous step-down converters optimized for small form factor designs.
These new products feature current mode control, high switching frequency, and integrated upper and lower MOSFETs. By reducing board space by up to 50% compared to other solutions, the size of equipment used in confined spaces, such as down-hole drilling, can be reduced. Key Features and Advantages of TPS50601 and TPS50301
• Maximum Efficiency: Low heat dissipation compared to competing products through maximum efficiency of up to 95%
• Design Flexibility: With switching frequencies of 100kHz to 1MHz and optimized compensation circuits, designers can strike a trade-off between size and efficiency.
• Board Space Reduction: High efficiency, optimal layout, and dynamic bias reduce the size and number of output capacitors and improve transient response, supporting over 12W per square inch of high power compared to competing products that support only 10W per square inch.
• High Reliability: The TPS50301 is certified for +210°C operation required for high-temperature applications, while the TPS50601 guarantees operation at +125°C for use in harsh environments, with QMLV/RHA certification in progress.
• Supports higher current operation: Using two devices in parallel enables double the output current.
Package, supply time, and price
TPS50601 and TPS50301 are being supplied as samples in 20-pin thermally reinforced dual in-line ceramic flat packs. You can check information on the recommended retail price of each product by contacting spacesample@list.ti.com for TPS50601 and htsamples@list.ti.com for TPS50301.
Tools and Support
The TPS50601 is supported in single and dual EVM configurations; the dual TPS50601SPEVM-D provides high efficiency and reliability by reducing stress on components. The single TPS50601SPEVM-S implements a split-input power rail that provides independent input voltage inputs for the power stage and control circuitry. The recommended retail prices for the single and dual EVMs are $499 and $599, respectively.
The TPS50601HKHMPR, a harsh environment engineering model (EM), is a prototype for initial evaluation by customers who wish to use the TPS50601. This model offers the same functionality and footprint as the TPS50601 and is available at a discounted price for evaluation purposes.
Reference designs for small form factors of approximately 1 square inch are also currently available. Information on device design methods and test results, as well as components, optimal layout, high efficiency, design calculation results, and transient response characteristics, is provided.
TI’s WEBENCH® online design tool supports TPS50601 and TPS50301 to streamline and accelerate the design process. You can also simulate and debug circuits using the SPICE model design tool.
