TI Launches Industry's First Single-Chip Battery Management Device for Power Tool and E-Bike Applications
A highly integrated standalone device that provides complete pack protection and cell balancing capabilities for lithium battery packs of up to 4 to 10 cells.
TI Korea (CEO Jaejin Kim, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) July 19, 2011 – TI has launched the industry's first single-chip battery protection and cell-balancing solution for lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs. The bq77910 battery management and protection device can manage battery packs of 4 to 10 cells and protect packs of 11 to 20 cells by stacking two devices. This device simplifies battery pack designs for e-bikes, e-scooters, portable gardening tools, power tools, and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), and can also be used to replace lead-acid batteries. The bq77910 drives two N-channel power MOSFETs to protect the battery pack by monitoring each cell voltage and to cut off the current in the event of a fault. The fault detection and recovery criteria of this device can be fully programmed into non-volatile memory, making it optimized for all types of lithium battery systems.

• Low-power operation: Low drive current (50µA under normal conditions, 2.5µA in shutdown mode) optimizes battery life by minimizing battery discharge during storage or idle periods.
• Support for various types of lithium batteries: With programmable (EEPROM) fault detection thresholds and time delay characteristics, the bq77910 is applicable to all lithium systems, including LiCoO2, LiFePO4 (LFP), etc.
• Standalone integrated solution requiring no external controller or processor
