Freescale, AirHop Announce Single-Chip Software Solution to Enhance Small Cell Base Station Efficiency
February 26, 2013, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL), a leader in wireless infrastructure technology, and AirHop Communications announced plans to integrate Freescale's high-performance QorIQ Qonverge processor with AirHop's eSON™ advanced Self-Organizing Network (SON) software to accelerate deployment of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) globally.
While adding small cell base stations to networks worldwide increases capacity and complements existing macrocell base stations, service providers face the challenge of coordinating and managing interactions between the growing number of network cells. AirHop's eSON™ software for the QorIQ Qonverge processor is designed to facilitate coordination between macrocell base stations and small cells, optimizing mobile traffic through dynamic load balancing and inter-cell interference management. This enables QorIQ Qonverge customers to accelerate 4G system deployment and optimize broadband coverage in heterogeneous networks (HetNets).

QorIQ Qonverge consists of integrated single-chip base station equipment based on advanced heterogeneous multicore technology. The broad product line addresses a wide range of multi-standard requirements from residential femtos to macrocells with a common architecture.
AirHop's advanced RAN intelligence solution manages interference and optimizes system capacity in multi-cell and multi-layer network configurations. AirHop's eSON™ software suite provides real-time optimization of available radio resources through multi-cell coordination, effectively delivering coverage, capacity, and Quality of Service (QoS) to each cell and individual users. These benefits are particularly important in heterogeneous network (HetNet) deployments where numerous auxiliary small cells may exist within macrocell coverage areas.
Through AirHop's eSON™ software, operators can deploy small cells on demand, realizing significant operational cost savings, while leveraging real-time multi-cell coordination and optimization to improve network capacity. This continuous optimization is performed at intervals of tens of milliseconds and can improve overall data throughput by 10 to 40 percent. AirHop's eSON software can be deployed as fully distributed, centralized, or hybrid architecture, and can be placed in the cloud and various network edge devices for optimal flexibility.
