The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport established a joint C-ITS working group.
In 2024, LTE-V2X and WAVE C-ITS standards were finalized.


The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) concluded discussions on the nationwide Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) implementation plan on the 26th. They also formed a C-ITS joint working group, comprised of both ministries, KETI, TTA, the Korea Expressway Corporation, and ITSK. C-ITS is a support infrastructure that enables vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road communication, enabling the proactive sharing of traffic hazard information and other information at distances far beyond the 150-200m range of vehicle sensors, enabling proactive response.

The two ministries held a kickoff meeting for the C-ITS joint working group at the government complex in Sejong City, where they discussed the LTE-V2X demonstration plan and future joint working group operation plans. In line with the Korean New Deal, the government is promoting the deployment of C-ITS on major roads nationwide starting this year.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will review the maturity and international trends of Wi-Fi-based WAVE technology and mobile communication-based LTE-V2X technology, which are currently being considered as potential targets, to select the communication technologies necessary for C-ITS deployment. Specifically, LTE-V2X will be demonstrated first by 2022, followed by a pilot project to use both technologies in parallel on select highways until 2023. After 2024, the plan is to expand nationwide as a single standard.

In particular, the highway pilot project will be implemented in parallel to address the volatility of regional trends and to secure early competitiveness in the domestic automobile industry and autonomous vehicles. Construction of the WAVE method will commence in the fourth quarter of this year. Construction of the LTE-V2X method will begin immediately following the expected completion of the demonstration project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Afterwards, nationwide deployment will be pursued using a single communication method, taking into account the results of the demonstration and pilot projects, as well as international trends.
